Tabuk City Vice-Mayor uses personal money to help flood-stricken area in Cagayan

Tabuk City, Kalinga – City Vice-Mayor Bernard Glenn Dao-as spent his salary in October and saved personal money to purchase relief goods for Barangay Afusing Daga in Alcala, Cagayan, one of the flood-stricken areas because of Ulysses.

In an interview, Dao-as said he chose the said barangay because of the information from a police officer in Cagayan saying that the place was not given relief yet.

Many areas in Cagayan experienced worst flooding in many years that it was described as once in a 100-year flood, and thus relief operations cannot immediately be brought to all areas affected.

This November 26, the Vice Mayor represented by his mother, Agnes Dao-as and other staff went to the said barangay.

“Ni mother ti nagpresenta nga mapan. Siak koma ngem adda ti meeting nga masapul nga adda nak. I know that my mother knows best in this kind of work ta isuna met ti tumultulong nu adda iti didigra. Isunga isu ti napan kadwana dagiti staff ti Vice-Mayor’s Office,” said Dao-as.

Dao-as likewise mentioned that although his office has been defunded and has not been provided due budget, he is inspired by the Tabukenos who do not wait for government’s help but act on their own. He added that it is better to help from your own pocket to show sincerity and to feel the sacrifice.

“Nu kayat tayo tumulong we can use our own money uray nu kasanu kabassit… mas mayat dayta kaysa usaren kwarta gobyerno nga pagparangem nga kwartam ti intulong mo,” stated Dao-as.

At least 150 packs which comprise of 5 kilograms rice, noodles, sardines, face mask, face shields, bottled drinking water, clothing, and blankets were delivered. There is also another 100 packs of blanket, face shield, as well as bath and laundry soap.

Meantime, Oplan Salacnib, a group of individuals who aims to ‘protect Tabuk City, Kalinga from the COVID-19 pandemic & future epidemics, and from excessive and brazen corruption’ also sent their relief goods which included clothing, sandals, soap, cooking oil, noodles, sardines, blankets, water, rice, and face shields to be given to the same beneficiaries.

“We the private individuals can help each other. We did it before during the oplan padatong when we pulled our resources and brought home our stranded kakailyans uray nu madi kayat ti gobyerno local that time. This time, we send help to Cagayan,” said a representative.
