Tabuk City, Kalinga - The largest cooperative in Kalinga, Tabuk Multipurpose Cooperative (TAMPCO), is committed to developing not just the regular members but also the ‘young future members’ through its Laboratory Cooperative (LABCO).

According to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Reverend Claudio Bagano, LABCO was organized in 2018 for in and out of the school youth, aging 18 years old and below. It has since then elected its officers including the Board of Directors and Committees.

Under the guidance of TAMPCO mother coop, the LABCO officers conduct their own meeting and perform similar duties that officers of the mother coop do. “They act as board of directors met lang iti maysa nga coop, they conduct their own meeting, and they decide,” Bagano said in an interview.

Instilling the habit of saving and thriftiness

The CEO underscored that with credit as the main business, they want to teach the young leaders and members the “habit of saving and thriftiness” in order for them to be prepared as responsible regular members in the future.

The savings that young members earn from the cooperative will be of big help to them when accumulated.

“Nu masurwan da ti thriftiness uray piso-piso lang ti isi-save da ti inaldaw, magulat kayo ta itatta ket naka 12 million dan for only two years from 2018. So that’s the purpose ket kayat tayu nga itultuloy diyay,” Bagano said.

Developing future leaders of the cooperative

Bagano explained that the youth shall be the “second liner leaders of the cooperative.” And thus, they are provided with various skills training such as public speaking citing the LABCO Chairman as an example.

Bagano described the LABCO Chairman as timid and aloof with people, avoiding public engagements. But with proper training, she can manage the board of directors and meetings she had to chair.

Bagano wishes that the youth would “continue improving themselves, continue developing their leadership and acquaint themselves in the coop way ta nagadu dagiti mabalin tayu nga mai-offer kinyada.”
