Tanudan, Kalinga IPMR emphasizes respect for IPs’ culture, heritage

Tanudan, Kalinga − Municipal Indigenous People Mandatory Representative Grace Dagadag sends out a message asking people of other background to respect the native cultural attire and the heritage of the yTanudans and yKalingas even in the midst of modernization.

With the mix and match and art being used of license by many, indigenous attires recently saw usage against the norm. One of the controversies was the performance done by a group where women wore men’s ‘ba-ag’ or g-string.

During the first Indigenous People’s Month celebration on October 26 at Banagao, Poblacion, Dagadag pointed out that the proper wearing of one’s cultural attire should be observed and respected, saying women should not wear the ‘ba-ag’ and the man should not use the ‘tapis’ as an example.

“Respetaren tayo da awa uwa tayo we cultural attire because they are sacred [Respetaren tayo dagitoy bagi tayo nga cultural attire because they are sacred],” she said.

The Municipal IPMR also noted that cultural practices should be preserved and sustained even in this digital age.

“..and amidst modernization dapat kuma ket i-sustain tau da sanat pagay we uwa tau we al-alagaan we kaugalian [and amidst modernization dapat kuma ket i-sustain tayo dagitoy bagi tayo nga kaugalian],” she conveyed.

Meantime, during the event, Dagadag announced that the celebration of the yTanudan’s identity will be done every 27th Day of October. This is through Municipal Ordinance No. 2022-69 which she passed and was approved by the members of the Sangguniang Bayan.
