Tanudan, Kalinga to open trekking routes for tourists in Mt. Binaratan, the silent mountain

Updated: Oct 3, 2022

Tanudan, Kalinga – Mount Binaratan in Dacalan, Tanudan, Kalinga is expected to open trekking routes for tourists after the Department of Tourism Cordillera (DOT-CAR) exploration team conducted an assessment of the said routes on September 16-17, 2022.

The exploration team is currently consolidating the data they gathered during their assessment period and will inform the public if the routes are good to promote for the tourist.

Mt. Binaratan, also known as the ‘Silent Mountain’, is described by the locals as a mountain that muted the sounds of animals – not even the sound of a breeze can be heard in the forest of the mountain. Mt. Binaratan is more than 1,800 meters above sea level and home to endangered species such as deer, wild pigs, monkeys, and numerous species of birds.

Said activity called as Cordillera Mountain Trail Expedition under the DOT-CAR program aims to discover or revive trails with historical value as well as special and unique natural features, including the mountain for exploration.

Accordingly, the department anticipated that by creating mountain path routes connecting the provinces in the region, it may increase the number of tourists, both domestic and international mountain enthusiasts.

James Tellias, an exploration team member, relayed to Guru Press Cordillera that they assessed the trekking routes if they are accessible and safe for the tourist to traverse in the said Mountain.

“To check if accessible yung trekking route sa mga turista, kasi isa rin yun sa tinitingnan namin yung kakayanin ng turista at kung safe ba yung daan,” said Tellias.

Tellias added one of their purposes in assessing routes in different provinces was to produce an audio-visual presentation which will be uploaded to their social media page to promote the trekking sites around Cordillera.

Among the members who assessed the trails in Tanudan were Al Tellias, Norman Rio, Jethro Paraiso, Reuel Paraiso, Ralph La Torre, Brigette Dea Adaya, Jonathan Modesto, and police personnel and local guides in Tanudan.

The activity started on September 11 at Hungduan town in Ifugao and ended on September 17 in Barangay Dacalan, Tanudan, Kalinga.
