Tawang, Balbalan named healthiest barangay in Kalinga

Balbalan, Kalinga – Tawang in Balbalan acquired the highest prize in Kalinga’s incentive-based health program after beating other participating barangays to be named as the “healthiest barangay” in the province this 2023.

The search for the healthiest barangay is an annual nutrition program of the Provincial Health Office that aimed at promoting community engagement in relation to public health and consequently recognizing the efforts of top winning villages.

Barangays in Balbalan have been among the awardees in previous bouts. In 2021, Ab-abaan was recognized for sustaining its healthy barangay status for the past five years or more.

Last year, Barangay Balbalasang emerged as the winner of the new entry category.

This year, Tawang village scored the highest in the indicators for the same category – good governance (36%) and service delivery (64%) thus, receiving the P100,000 grand prize with a plaque of recognition from Governor James Edduba during the culminating program held Wednesday, August 2.

"Their commitment to creating and improving physical and social environments that foster mutual support among the community in performing all aspects of life set them apart from the rest," said the provincial government in a press release.

Meanwhile, Barangay Buaya of the same town was conferred P150,000 and a plaque for making it to the “sustainability category.”

Mayor Almar Malannag took to social media to congratulate the winning barangays and urged them to continue inspiring other barangays in Balbalan and in Kalinga, for the creation of a healthier environment.

Other winners

Cagaluan of Pasil and Old Tanglag of Tabuk took home P60,000 and P40,000, respectively for settling as second and third placer for this year’s search.
