Tawang Farmers’ Association to get egg hatchery project from DAR

Balbalan, Kalinga – A farmers’ association from Barangay Tawang is set to establish their own egg hatchery not only as a livelihood project, but also as a source of egg products in said far flung locality.

Adeline Bassiag, Program Officer I of DAR-Kalinga, said that the livelihood project for the 100 member-Tawang Farmers’ Association which amounts to P 300, 000 was realized through the Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (PAHP) of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).

For the project, DAR personnel said hatchery equipment and materials delivered on Thursday, March 11, 2021, include one unit egg incubator (500-eggs capacity with complete accessories), drinking troughs, 5 rolls chicken wires, 1 monocycle cartella, 3 large stackable multipurpose containers, 1 unit gasul with 1 stove burner, 1 large weighing scale and 1 unit brooder.

The 395 ready-to-lay chickens shall be delivered as soon as the housing will be done.

Alongside the delivery of materials, the agency reported that their inspectorate team together with one representative from the Provincial Agrarian Reform Coordinating Committee (PARCCOM) checked the delivered equipment to ensure it is in consonance with regulations.

On why the organization was chosen as a recipient, Bassiag said that Barangay Tawang is one of the barangays in the province with the most number of agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARB)s and that most of the association’s 100 members are ARB – which is a requirement in availing livelihood projects from DAR.

As for marketing assistance, the officer said the department partnered with the Bureau of Jail and Management and Penology, hospitals and schools in the province to be the organization’s consumers, aside from the locals. This is to ensure that their products are sold upon harvest.

The agency will also monitor the progress of the project in order to ensure its sustainability as a livelihood venture.

PAHP is a convergence program of various agencies to include DAR, Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Interior and Local Government and other participating government agencies with the goal to reduce poverty and hunger in the countryside.
