Teenage pregnancy remains high in Cordillera

Updated: Jul 2, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – The teenage pregnancy rate in the Cordillera region experienced an alarming increase, nearly doubling from 3.5 percent in 2017 to 6.1 percent in 2022.

According to Philippine Statistics Authority-Cordillera, CAR is among two regions in the country where there was a noticeable increase in the number of women aged 15 to 19 who had ever given birth.

This is based on the results of the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey.

Among the 17 regions, Cordillera is also ranked the seventh highest in terms of teenage pregnancy cases in 2022.

With said data, Acting Director Cecile Basawil of the Commission on Population and Development-Cordillera expressed a deep concern about the increased incidence of pregnancy saying ‘it should alarm the community and start doing a “proactive” approach in addressing the problem.’

Basawil strongly emphasizes that addressing the aforementioned problem requires collaborative effort and unity among the parents, Local Government Units (LGUs), and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), thus the need for them to work together to tackle the issue at hand.
