The importance of intervention and remediation in Face-to-Face and Blended Learning

Intervention and remediation are similar to re-teaching whose goal is to close the identified gaps in the learning performance of students compared to desired levels to be achieved. By using the right tools and resources, teachers can quickly identify when remediation or intervention is needed. It allows educators to address the gaps in knowledge and work to help every student build a strong foundation for them to continue their educational journey.

Although there are trainings and seminars provided for its successful implementation, conducting them poses challenges in both face-to-face and blended learning. Nevertheless, there are some suggestions that could aid in expecting better outcomes.

One key to successful reteaching is utilizing peers or even parents as partners in the process – especially when trying to personalize learning for our slow vs fast learners.

Another consideration is managing time and using available breaks to expose learners needing remediation to more learning. During lunch breaks, intervention activities in Filipino or English subjects such as reading programs or Phil IRI, discussions, film viewing activities, or review classes may be conducted with peer teachers as group leaders and teachers as facilitators.

A known best practice of personalized intervention and remediation, especially when in a blended learning set-up, is the utilization of right resources. Technology can provide tools needed to identify gaps in learning. Right now, many teachers are using Messenger to cascade information, Google Forms for quizzes and activities, and other tools to catch the students who are struggling with a concept or a subject.

Aside from conducting remediation classes or intervention activities during breaks or beyond school hours, another option for teachers is to utilize curriculum resources to personalize the pacing and assignments for the class. Teachers can use formative assessments to identify the foundational skills that the whole class, a small group, or individual students need to work on. If the whole class is struggling, a teacher may decide to give each student the concepts they need to work on outside of class, using targeted resources like Learning Activity Sheets or Worksheets.

Students have their own unique backgrounds with varying strengths and weaknesses. This presents a massive challenge to the subject teachers to not only recognize these differences but to develop strategies that address each student's needs. This is why personalized learning and relearning through intervention and remediation are essential.
