Tinglayan, BFAR-Kalinga conducts tree planting on Fish Conservation Week along Bunog River

Updated: Sep 24, 2022

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Aimed at preserving and safeguarding fisheries and aquatic resources in the municipality, the Local Government Unit of Tinglayan in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries-Kalinga planted trees along the Bunog River in Poblacion in celebration of the Fish Conservation Week this year.

The activity conducted last week resulted in the planting of 30 Avocado, 12 Rambutan and 51 Narra tree seedlings.

Provincial Fishery Officer Joyce Ducyogen highlighted that the activity is helpful in avoiding soil erosion. And when the trees grow, this will help increase the water volume of the watershed areas apart from assuring provisions of fruits.

Tinglayan fisherfolks, as recalled, have been benefiting from pond culture livelihood packages by the agency through fingerlings, feeds and fish harvesting equipment, making the site a choice for the Provincial Fishery Office for the activity.

According to Larae Lactao of the Municipal Information Office of Tinglayan, it was initially planned that a clean-up drive was supposed to be done, but after noticing the cleanliness of the site, the group of government workers focused solely on planting trees.

“Supposedly, clean-up drive and tree planting ti activities nga maaramid ngem gapu ta nasangpetan da Ma’am Ducyogen nga naglinis ti karayan, haanen nga agdalus pay lang ti naaramid, tree planting na lang,” she relayed.

Barangay Captain Ando of Poblacion said the cleanliness of the Bunog River is a result of the consolidated effort of the community and barangay officials along with the implementation and cooperation of government programs such as the barangay’s Search for Healthy Sitio, Provincial and Municipal Search for Healthy Barangay.

Fish Conservation Month

By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 176 and as mandated in the Fisheries Code of the Philippines (RA 8550 s. 1998), the celebration intensifies awareness of the need to conserve and protect fisheries and aquatic resources, according to the BFAR website
