Tinglayan holds its biggest youth sports fest for the first time since pandemic

Tinglayan, Kalinga – The municipality of Tinglayan commenced its 2024 Sangguniang Kabataan Sports Fest with a grand parade on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

The activity returns for the first time after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last sports fest was held back in 2018.

The sports activity features basketball tournament for men and volleyball for women.

Youth from the 20 barangays of Tinglayan gathered at Poblacion to participate in the event, with its closing ceremony slated July 31.

The activity was organized by the SK Federation and Local Youth Development Council.

It aims at fostering camaraderie, athleticism, and good sportsmanship among the youth, in addition to promoting physical and mental wellness.

It also serves as an avenue to discourage youth from using illegal drugs and get away from harmful vices.

This year’s sports event is anchored in the theme, "A Celebration of Youth's Strength: Tinglayan's Rise through Sports”.

Mayor Sacrament Gumilab believes such activities are needed to instill in the youth importance of friendship, team work and collaboration for a common goal. The Mayor foresees its success and hopes the sports programs of the town will flourish to help young people develop their athletic skills while at the same time take them away from bad influence and illegal drug use.
