Tinglayan, Kalinga plants 6,300 trees to ensure stability of watershed

Tinglayan, Kalinga –To help address the effects of climate change as well as increasing the number of watershed areas in Tinglayan, 630 yTinglayans from its 9 barangays were provided temporary employment for 10 days to plant trees in the municipality.


The said individuals are beneficiaries of the cash for work by the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Kalinga.


Said program is under the agency’s Special Program for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Risk Resiliency and Watershed Development.

The implementation of the program started from June to August this year – each barangay was put into separate schedules.


The recipients benefitting from the P2,142,000 fund in said program are from the barangays of Bugnay, Bangad Centro, Belong Man-Ubal, Butbut Proper, Sumadel II, Lower Bangad, Upper Bangad, Luplupa and Tulgao West.


Seedlings planted by the recipients, according to Larae Lactao of the Municipal Information Office of Tinglayan, include Mahogany, Narra, Dao and paper tree.


These seedlings were provided by the Provincial Government Office of Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), one of the partners of DSWD-Kalinga in the implementation of the program.

For the monitoring of the program’s implementation, DSWD-Kalinga partnered with the Local Government of Tinglayan through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).


In a statement, Mayor Sacrament Gumilab extended his gratitude to the agencies involved, particularly the social welfare and development agency for bringing the program to the municipality benefitting his constituents, who were not spared from the effects of the pandemic.


“This program is like hitting two birds in one stone. Apart from alleviating the financial stress of my constituents from the Covid-19 pandemic, this is also beneficial to the environment. We are then grateful to the DSWD, the PGENRO for making such project possible in our municipality,” he stated.
