Tinglayan LGU to grant awards to outstanding farmers to improve the town’s agri-industry

Updated: Jun 30

Tinglayan, Kalinga – The local government of Tinglayan is set to make significant steps in the continuous promotion of sustainable agriculture in the municipality by granting awards to their outstanding farmers.

In a forum held Wednesday, June 26, focused on the agricultural sector in town, the LGU through the Municipal Agricultural Services announced that top-performing farmers who advocate and utilize sustainable agriculture practices will be recognized.

The recognition to said farmers will be incentive-based with barangay officials in Tinglayan tasked in identifying farmers worthy of said accolade.

The plan is seen to push agricultural growth in the municipality while also motivating farmers to make use of sustainable agricultural practices.

Apart from said plan, other agricultural topics were also discussed during the event. These include the many programs on rice, fishery, high-value crops, and livestock.

In relation to this, farmers and barangay officials were encouraged to sustain timely reporting of crop and livestock damages as this is essential in getting the necessary support and intervention from the government.

It was underscored that in order to access government intervention programs as to damages in crops and livestock, documentations and reporting is required to facilitate the fast delivery of said government programs.

Meantime, farmers, particularly those residing in Upper Tinglayan, were advised to continue cultivating heirloom rice which is known in the vernacular as ‘unoy rice’.

The continuous cultivation of said crop will ensure the preservation of the cultural heritage of iKalingas.

To further encourage farmers, a discussion on the market potential and benefits of organic farming, especially to high value crops was made.

With said steps, the local government headed by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab is hopeful that agricultural growth would be improved in Tinglayan, ensuring long-term prosperity as envisioned in the municipality’s tagline ‘Tongrayan Umunno-unnoy”.
