Van runs over toddler from Isabela in Ilocos

Vintar, Ilocos Norte – The police warned vehicle owners to always walk around their vehicle and check the area around it before driving to prevent hitting children that may result in injury or worse, death.

Parents are likewise cautioned to keep close supervision of their children to counteract elevated risks of unfortunate accidents.

This is following the incident in Manarang, Vintar, Ilocos Norte that killed a toddler from Santiago village of Benito Soliven, Isabela on Tuesday, March 14.

The family of the 2-year-old victim was in Vintar to attend their relative’s wake. The victim, accordingly, asked permission from his mother to go out from the house and pee. The mother accompanied the toddler outside but she went back inside to grab her bag, while the victim was urinating in front of the black Nissan van.

That time, the van’s driver also went out from the house and drove the car to park it properly, Police Captain Manuel Ordonio of Vintar police station said.

The driver identified as Wilson Garcia, 45, married, and uncle of the victim failed to notice the toddler in front who was accidentally hit.

Upon seeing the car move, the mother hurried to save her child but was already late as the victim’s head had been smashed by the wheel that resulted in the toddler's immediate death.

Believing what happened was an accident, the mother said they will not be pursuing charges against the driver-relative.

Garcia pledged financial aid up to the victim’s burial.
