Tabuk City, Kalinga – Outdoor enthusiasts, particularly trekkers and hikers, have been advised to postpone or modify their hiking activities in the Cordillera Region following the current spell of bad weather resulting from the effects of the shear line and northeast monsoon.

The Department of Tourism-Cordillera, in an advisory, said the rugged terrain of this region can become challenging and unpredictable during such conditions, which might increase the risks of accidents and hazards.

The agency emphasized that tourists should exercise utmost caution when planning to engage in said activities, especially during heavy rains and other weather disturbances.

“Remember, your safety should always be the top priority. It is better to postpone or modify your hiking and trekking plans rather than putting yourself at risk in unfavorable weather conditions,” said the region’s tourism department.

Before planning such activities, hikers and trekkers should first check the weather forecasts and predictions provided by local authorities and reliable sources.

Also, tourists are advised to check local authorities' advisories, as they may issue warnings or restrictions on outdoor activities during adverse weather conditions.

If tourists are already at their destination and encounter sudden weather changes, they should seek shelter immediately and should no longer continue their trekking journey.

In terms of getting their guides, the tourism department said trekkers should choose experienced guides who are familiar with the region and can provide valuable insights on weather conditions and potential risks.

The wearing of safety gear during hiking activities is also necessary.

“These include helmets, non-slip footwear, and any other necessary equipment to minimize the risk of accidents,” DOT-Cordillera said.
