Tricycle fare increase in Tabuk City approved on first reading

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Members of Tabuk City Council approved on first reading the request of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA), increasing the fare rate of tricycles on all routes by 20% amid oil price hikes.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod headed by Acting Vice-Mayor Atty. Zorayda Mia Wacnang made the approval during their regular session this April 11, 2022 held at Las Vegas Hotel and Restaurant, Dagupan West, Tabuk City.

In their letter dated April 01, the members of the different tricycle operators and drivers petitioned SP-Tabuk to pass an ordinance allowing the fare increase due to successive and continuous price hikes of petroleum products and the high cost of maintenance.

“While we recognize the plight of the Filipino people every time an increase in the prices of commodities occurs, we urge the Honorable Members of the Sangguniang Panlunsod, not to be insensitive to the present clamor of the stakeholders in public land transportation services for necessary action relative rates vi-a-vis the right of grantees of certificates of public convenience to a reasonable return on investment,” states the TODA members.

In response to the request, the Committee on Transportation conducted two public hearings and later found out that the TODA submitted their petition for the provision of a tricycle fare hike for an additional 59%, equivalent to P7 from the prevailing fare rate.

After a series of consultations, public hearings, and meeting with the TODA, stakeholders, concerned agencies, and other concerned public commuters, and finding the request justifiable, the committee recommended amending Ordinance No. 03, series of 2019 otherwise known as the Ordinance Setting Tricycle Fare Rate in Tabuk City, Kalinga.

The committee recommended a 20% or P2 across the board increase in tricycle fare rate in the same ordinance, instead of the 59% requested by the TODA.

The city council moved to approve the ordinance sought by the committee, amending the Tricycle Fare Rate of the city.
