Cagayan, Philippines – The ‘MagSAKAbataan Community Garden’ in Annafunan East, Tuguegarao, a Sangguniang Kabataan initiated project is now benefiting said community as various vegetables are being harvested amidst the pandemic.

According to Cagayan Provincial Information Office, the project started in June 2021, when members of the Sangguniang Kabataan planted organic white corn to a vacant lot in their barangay.

Organic white corn was chosen since it suited the type of soil and it is easy to harvest aside from being an alternative to rice and corn being a popular snack.

Half of the 350 square meters lot was planted with a variety of vegetables.

The report mentioned that one-fourth of the white corn has already been harvested and was given as a snack to those on duty at Barangay Hall and those at the Annafunan East checkpoint.

As for the vegetables, it was given to the people in their barangay.

Meanwhile, the youth group opted to further expand their vegetable production to supply the community pantry in the coming days as their barangay is currently on relief operation for the people affected by the imposition of quarantine in Tuguegarao City.

Said project was spearheaded by Annafunan East SK Chairman Gerald Valdez, who expressed hope that the other youth organization in Cagayan would also have their own garden in order to help those in need during the pandemic.

The “MagSAKAbataan para sa Cagayan at Kinabukasan” is a program of Governor Manuel N. Mamba which is covered by the No Town/Barangay Left Behind program of the Provincial Local Government of Cagayan.
