“Tulungan ang mga magulang, ‘wag iasa lahat sa kanila”-student's inspiring story of juggling studies and delivery gigs

Hanscarl Orel, a first-year Hotel and Restaurant Management student at Cagayan State University - Lal-lo Campus, sets an example by balancing work and education.

At 18, Orel has taken on a part-time job as a J&T delivery rider to support his studies financially.

In an exclusive interview, he told GURU Press Cordillera that he started this job on December 22, 2023, to help alleviate the pressure on his parents and pay for educational costs like laboratory fees.

"Alam kong malaki ang magagastos ko sa kursong BSHM para sa mga laboratory at ito ang aking pinag-iipunan at pinaghahandaan. Para na rin makatulong ako sa aking mga magulang upang mabawasan ang kanilang gastusin dahil alam kong pagod na sila lalo na't dalawa kaming magkapatid na kailangan nilang pag-aralin,” Orel relayed.

Despite the demanding situation of balancing work and studies, Orel remains undeterred.

"Ang pinakamahirap lang na challenge sa akin ay 'yung gumising ng maaga dahil malayo ang bahay namin at kailangan kong pumunta sa J&T hub ng 6:30 AM para i-scan 'yung mga parcel upang hindi ito malapse," Orel shared.

In a message to his fellow youth, Orel emphasized the importance of supporting one's parents and not solely relying on them for financial assistance. He urged young people to take responsibility and make the most of their time by pursuing meaningful endeavors that align with their dreams and aspirations.

“Sa mga kabataan kagaya ko, tulungan nyo ang mga magulang nyo, wag lang kayong umasa sa kanila dahil hindi sila robot habang tumatagal tumatanda sila at humihina kayat wag nyo silang pahirapan dahil malalaki na tayo, malalakas na tayo kaya na nating magtrabaho, wag nyong sayangin ang mga oras sa mga walang kwentang bagay na wala namang kinalaman sa mga pangarap nyo o hindi makakatulong sainyo para umangat sa buhay," he added.

Orel's story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the determination and sense of responsibility that young individuals can possess. His dedication to both his education and his family exemplifies the spirit of resilience and hard work that can pave the way for a brighter future, not just for himself but for his loved ones as well.
