Tabuk City, Kalinga – Typhoon-hit Cordilleran farmers will receive seeds to replace those they lost to ‘Egay’ in July.

The super typhoon swept away at least 1,862,989 metric tons of crops of 43,906 farmers and fisherfolk in Cordillera.

The region recorded P1,125,748,219 worth of agricultural damage, based on data shared by Aida Pagtan of the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Service (RAFIS) through the government’s official web-based newswire service.

Corn damage was at P460.3 million; high-value crops were at P453.4 million; rice fields at P179 million; livestock at P21.8 million; and agriculture infrastructure at P11.1 million.

As part of Department of Agriculture – Cordillera’s corn, rice and high-value crop programs, the agency is set to distribute initial 3,266 bags of corn seeds to affected farmers in Bucay and Pidigan, Abra; Calanasan, Flora, Kabugao, Luna, Pudtol, and Sta. Marcela in Apayao; Aguinaldo, Lagawe and Mayoyao in Ifugao; Tabuk City and Pinukpuk in Kalinga; and Natonin in Mt. Province.

On August 03, 580 bags, each containing three kilograms of hybrid rice seeds, including 300 packets of assorted vegetable seeds and lowland vegetable seeds from the agency’s buffer stocks, were already delivered to Abra.

While the farmers are repairing their farms, the DA – Cordillera is fast-tracking the rehabilitation plan which will later be submitted for funding to provide the farmers more assistance for them to recover from the scourge of the typhoon.
