Kalinga is 3rd highest in CAR for cases of influenza-like illnesses

Tabuk City, Kalinga - The number of individuals in Kalinga affected by Influenza-like illnesses (ILI) has doubled for the first six months of 2024, according to the Department of Health Cordillera.


Influenza-like illness is a viral infection that attacks the respiratory tract, including the nose, throat and lungs. The affected person can transmit the virus to another person through direct or indirect contact.


The more complicated stage of the illness is called the Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) where the affected person can feel shortness of breath.


The data from the DOH - Cordillera Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit showed that there are 7,132 cases of ILI observed in the region from January to June this year.


Most of the patients infected are children, while the oldest is 101 years old. As of now, no death has been recorded.


Of the 7,132 cases, Kalinga logged the third-highest number of cases with 794. It is almost 12o percent higher compared to the 365 cases in the same period in 2023.


The province with the highest number is Benguet, followed by Baguio City with 2,801.


Other cases were listed in Apayao with 306; Abra with 143; Ifugao with 130; and Mt. Province with the lowest cases at 99.


With this problem, the regional health department encourages the public to maintain hygiene and sanitation practices and follow the minimum public health standards.
