UP Baguio microbiology graduate earns Canada’s 1st leadership-driven scholarship

Baguio City, Philippines – A graduate of the University of the Philippines Baguio is set to embark on a journey to Canada for his postgraduate studies after being awarded the country’s first leadership-driven scholarship.

Khianne Orteza, who graduated magna cum laude from UP Baguio with a major in microbiology, is now poised to pursue his aspirations further. Recently, he was granted the prestigious C$10,000 McCall MacBain Regional Award, marking the beginning of his pursuit of higher education.

The McCall MacBain scholarship is recognized as Canada’s first leadership-driven scholarship for master’s and professional degree students. This program seeks to bring together scholars who have demonstrated outstanding character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic excellence, and intellectual curiosity.

Out of 2,250 applicants from various universities worldwide, Orteza distinguished himself, placing among the top 50. Remarkably, he is one of the first two graduates from Philippine universities selected for this prestigious grant.

Orteza, as described by his alma mater, UP Baguio, not only excelled academically but also made significant contributions to the communities in Cordillera. He conducted workshops in underserved schools, assisted patients at an HIV clinic, helped raise funds for sustainability initiatives, and contributed to a teletherapy service. Additionally, he initiated a science training program in 2019.

Recognizing his accomplishments, the Baguio City government lauded Orteza for his milestone achievement. Currently, he is in the process of applying for a master’s degree in microbiology and related fields, aiming to continue his pursuit of academic excellence and community service on an international stage.
