Tabuk City, Kalinga – Philippine Vice President and Department of Education Secretary, Sara Duterte-Carpio told Kalinga leaders to prioritize investing in education.

“As we started implementing Executive Order No. 138, empowering our local government units toward full autonomy and greater resiliency, I enjoin our local leaders to prioritize investments in education,” said Sara during the School Day program of the 28th Kalinga Founding Anniversary and 4th Bodong Festival on February 13.

In her Basic Education Report (BER) 2023, there are 104,536 out of 327,851 school buildings in the country that are in good condition. Meanwhile, 100,073 school buildings need minor repairs, 89,252 need major repairs and 21, 727 are set for condemnation.

With this, the DepEd Secretary emphasized the need for the DepEd to work in collaboration with various Local Government Units, including all LGUs in Kalinga, the private sector, and even international partners to take the necessary steps to address the nation's education crisis and aid Filipino learners.

VP Sara disclosed her two strategies for enhancing the quality of education, one of which is to construct more classrooms and hire more teachers to accommodate the growing number of learners.

Another strategy is the institutionalized blended learning program through the integration of technology into education.

The Vice President also encouraged Kalinga officials to continue the fight against the detergency and drugs in the province as these would affect the future of Kalinga youth.

Provision of teachers' benefits

VP Sara added that the DepEd is continuously pursuing the update of the teacher’s law in the country known as the Magna Carta for public school teachers.

The DepEd chief is currently discussing with various agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) to provide more benefits, free medical checkups, and free legal advice for teachers.

Meantime, the official vows to support the province in the pursuit of economic transformation to improve the lives and welfare of the Kalinga people.
