Volleyball Tournament in Kalinga launched to promote peace engagement among youth

Tabuk City, Kalinga – In a bid to prevent violent extremism in the province while promoting youth engagement in peace, Police Staff Sergeant Ramos Palangyo of Kalinga Provincial Forensic Unit (KPFU) along with volleyball national qualifier Debbie Asuncion and Novareen Wasay launched a three-day Summer Volleyball Tournament on August 05, 2022.


The organizers partnered with KPFU, Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, Tanudan Mayor Jaedicke Rhoss Dagadag, KPPO Provincial Director Peter Tagtag Jr., Regional Director of Police Regional Office 2 Steve Ludan, and other officials in the provincial government headed by James Edduba.

Also part of the success of the event were the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Plus), Sangguniang Kabataan of Bulanao Centro, and Saved by Grace Volleyball Women’s Club led by Team Captain Asuncion.


Before the tournament commenced, Kristal Gail Dacio of the Provincial Health Office briefed the athlete participants on preventive measures against monkeypox and on adolescent nutrition, encouraging them to focus on nutrient-dense foods to meet their nutritional and dietary needs.


After the rundown, at least 17 teams from all over the province played for the championship crown. Twelve teams battled in the men's category while 5 teams competed for the women's division.


Tournament Winners


After three straight days, Pinukpuk Tigers proved their superiority, emerging as the overall champion for the men’s category.

Team Pokers composed of LGBTQIA+ and youth comes second, followed by Tabuk Volleyball Club (TVC) 1 and TVC 2.


Meanwhile, team Saved by Grace (SBG) won for the women's level while Elite B group secured second place and Tripple N ranked third.

Corresponding prizes were given to the top three winning teams of each category.


Sport as an essential tool for peacebuilding


Palangyo expressed his profound gratitude to the sponsors and hopes that the event will serve as an inspiration for others, especially the youth, that sport is an essential tool for peacebuilding and development.

Sports, he added, promote tolerance and respect and at the same time empower individuals, thus supporting stability across the province.


League to aid the operation of worker with a fractured leg


In addition, the league was conducted as the organizers' means to raise funds to help with the operation of an employee with a fractured leg.

The worker is said to be from Tuguegarao City but was deployed in Kalinga satellite office of Pag-IBIG (Pagtutulungan sa Kinabukasan: Ikaw, Bangko, Industriya at Gobyerno) Fund.


Moreover, the organizers disclosed that the tournament is part of their desire that the One yKalinga Volleyball Club be created someday.
