‘We have a very peaceful and safe Baguio’ - Magalong assures students coming to city

Baguio City, Philippines - As academic classes start, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong assured students coming to the city that the country's summer capital is a safe place for their studies.

‘Rest assured that we have a very peaceful and safe Baguio’, said the mayor in an interview with the Baguio Public Information Office on August 23.

Despite the good peace and order situation in the city, Magalong cautioned students for their safety. They should avoid bar hopping and instead focus on their studies, he said.

“Sa ating mga estudyante, please observe safety and make sure that when you come up to the City of Baguio, be conscious of your security, your safety… avoid muna 'yong mga bars diyan, 'yong mga water holes diyan, concentrate on your studies and make sure that you spend your money well,” he said.

In connection, the Baguio Tourism Office, as reported by the Philippine Information Agency - Baguio, revealed that there are about 155,000 enrollees in the city per year from 19 private colleges and universities, 2 government tertiary institutions, and 103 Technical – Vocational schools during the pre-pandemic time.

The agency said that students are big contributors to the city’s economy, bringing in an estimated P9 billion in annual gross receipts.

About 18,000 of them are foreign students who are also contributing an estimated P2.7 billion annual gross receipts, making Baguio the ‘educational center in the north’.
