Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor James Edduba emphasized that while peace is yet to be restored between Butbut and Betwagan sub-tribes, it must be ensured that no life will be lost again.

The two warring tribes have a decades-old boundary dispute that has taken a number of lives already. The latest peace dialogue initiated by the government for the case was held on July 12 this year in Bulanao where tribesmen from Betwagan weren’t able to attend because they were on ‘ngilin’.

The two are yet to reach a consensus.

The governor, in his message during the turn-over of command ceremony of Kalinga Police Provincial Office on August 10, explained it is more difficult to reconcile warring parties if both are not yet willing to meet halfway.

Until then, the government and uniformed personnel should ensure the safety of the people in both communities.

“We should avoid nga adda manen iti matay. Ta inggana sumrek ti puso da iti ayat ti peace ket baka isuda met lang nga mismo iti ag-Bodong nga duwa,” he said, acknowledging the deployment of police officers at the boundary of Butbut and Betwagan.

With the assumption of office of new Kalinga Police Director, PCol. Freddie Lazona, Governor Edduba encouraged him to maintain his predecessors’ swift response to prevent escalation of conflicts, citing the KPPO’s fast deployment of police officers in the Mabongtot-Lubuagan conflict.

The governor concluded his message by committing the provincial government’s support to the Philippine National Police.
