What’s new in this year’s Cordillera Day?

It has been 34 years since the Cordillera Administrative Region was born, and year on year Cordillerans celebrate the founding day on July 15. Last year, it was celebrated thru virtual activities and ceremonies, so what’s new this year?

The 34th Cordillera Anniversary is celebrated this month with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - CAR taking the lead role in the month long celebration, and thus the theme, “Working together towards Cordillera Autonomy through Green Recovery.”

The Cordillera Regional Development Council’s Watershed SeCom chaired by the DENR-CAR Regional Executive Director, Ralph C. Pablo highlights the campaign for the region’s goal to become an autonomous region in the country.

Earlier this month, a ceremonial celebration kick-off was done on July 1, 2021 and was joined by officials and representatives from national government agencies, local government units and the civil sector face-to-face with other participants joining online via Zoom conference, followed by showcasing of Ornamental Bamboos simultaneously done with the Climate and Disaster Risk Assessment.

Other activities expected this month

Webinar on (Environment and Natural Resources) ENR Technologies (July 05 to 26 ); Cordillera Day (July 15); Acceleration of Green Economic Development Training, Green Consumerism/Sustainable Consumption (July 19); Cordillera Weavers Summit (July 20), Rocknetting, Dissemination and Stakeholders Forum on Physical Asset Account & Regional Compendium on Environment Statistics (July 26); and Kapihan on the 2020 State of the Region Address and Sectoral Reports (July 30).

Meanwhile, the proclamation also cited that cordillerans must pay attention on community quarantine, social distancing, and other public health measures while celebrating the month-long event.

The creation of the Cordillera Administrative Region composed of the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mt. Province and the chartered city of Baguio was done through Executive Order No. 220, series 1987 signed by then Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino on July 15, 1987.

The birth of the region precedes struggles during the 1970s to the mid-1980s in protecting ancestral lands in which some Cordillerans died fighting for their rights to ancestral domains and self-determination. In 1986, the Sipat or the Mount Data peace Accord which ended the hostilities promised autonomy which was enshrined in the ensuing 1987 constitution. Nevertheless, since that time it has not yet been realized.
