Cagayan, Philippines – A woman in Cagayan did not survive the venom of a Philippine cobra and died just before she could get medical treatment, according to a local media report.

In the Philippines, snakebites are rampant, with 13,377 snake bite victims every year, 550 of them resulting in death, according to a study published in 2022.

The country is a home to 147 snakes taxa including the highly venomous Philippine Cobra which is considered to be one of the deadliest in the world. It has been described that one strike from the serpent can kill a person in 30 minutes.

The latest bite of this highly lethal ophidian was documented in Bitag Pequeño in Baggao, Cagayan. A local media report said that on April 8, the 38-year-old victim accidentally stepped on a snake while she was on her way to a fishpond located near a river and rice fields.

The snake bit the victim, who managed to go home and tell her husband of the incident. Unfortunately, the woman passed away just before they could reach the hospital.

Just last month, a man in Baggao also reportedly died of a snakebite.
