Woman in Baguio faces charges for posting false kidnapping incident on social media

Baguio City, Philippines - A woman in Baguio now faces charges after posting false kidnapping incident on her social media account that alarmed the people in the city.


In a report by Mountain Province Broadcasting Corporation, the woman was charged for violating Article 154, a revised penal code or Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances as well as violating Section 6 of Republic Act 1075 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.


The case was filed by the Baguio prosecutor’s office on Friday, September 23, 2022.

Said woman was from San Fernando, Pampanga, and is currently living in the city. The report said that she alleged there was a white van roaming around Barangay Trancoville kidnapping people.


To clarify the fake incidents, William Regacho, Captain of said barangay, released a statement that there was no kidnapping incident that transpired in their place, adding that there were no missing people reported to their office.


Police Brigadier General Joel Dotia, Director of Anti-Cyber Crime Group, explained that anyone who publishes any unreliable information to the public that may arouse fear in individuals shall be punished by the law.

Dotia said violators shall be punished by prison correccional in its minimum and medium periods or a fine ranging from P40,000 to P1,200,000.


In addition, the General warned the public to avoid making any speculations or publishing fake information, especially those that arouse fear or chaos.


As of this writing, an arrest has not been made as the warrant for the woman has not yet been released.
