Wounded 'musang' rescued in Sta. Marcela, Apayao

Santa Marcela, Apayao – Alarming authorities through social media regarding issues that need to be addressed quickly can be helpful at times.

Such method exhibited by a concerned citizen who uploaded an alarming photo of a distressed animal resulted in the saving of the life of one of the country’s rare and endemic species, the civet cat.

Civet cats are also known for excreting coffee seeds, considered the world’s most expensive coffee.

Having seen the photos shared online, a certain Geraldine Pascua, who is stationed at the animal checkpoint in Sta. Marcela, notified the Provincial Veterinary Office.

The office quickly responded to the report and collaborated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Apayao in Malekkeg Sta. Marcela for a rescue operation.

In the area, a male civet was found sick, displaying clear signs of lethargy and weakness.

The civet cat also has wounds, which include a 4-5mm-diameter cranial puncture on its left eye, a 5 mm-deep laceration on the lower eyelid, and a minor bruise on its forehead.

A series of tests were immediately conducted, and the medical needs of the animal were met shortly.

The report of the Provincial Information Office of Apayao on Monday, October 16, said the immediate response of the PVO ensured the timely rescue and aid to the civet cat locally known as 'musang'.

With said incident, concerned agencies are now reminding yApayaos of the legal consequences of collecting, hunting, and owning wildlife without the necessary government permit, underscoring that the provisions of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147) must be followed.

To recall, a Philippine serpent eagle was likewise rescued on Sept. 25 in the province after its right foot was wounded after it was tried to be put in captivity by an unidentified individual.
