Wounded NPA commander in Ifugao abandoned by comrades, given first aid by the army

Ifugao, Philippines – A wanted Communist Terrorist Group commander was seriously injured and left behind by comrades after an armed encounter with the army. He was later given first aid by the government forces in Ifugao on May 26, 2022.

Avelino Cruz, also known as Junel/Alcaras, is said to be the Vice Commanding Officer of Front Operational Command, Guerilla Front Abra-Mt. Province-Ilocos Sur. He is facing charges of multiple murder, multiple frustrated murder, and attempted murder.


Cruz was seriously wounded after a gunfight between the army and his group on May 23 and 24 in Barangay Namal, Asipulo, Ifugao, the 54th Infantry Battalion reported.


After clashing twice with the CTGs, the government troops found Cruz abandoned by his fleeing comrades on May 26 while conducting a pursuit operation near the encounter sites.

The CTG commander received first aid from army personnel before they brought him to the nearest hospital for further medical treatment.


54th Infantry Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Franz Diamante conveyed that government forces value human lives and will always uphold the human rights of every individual.


“We extend our gratitude to the people of Barangay Namal, Asipulo, Ifugao for the information on the presence of a wounded terrorist in the area. I commend the troops for immediately aiding the wounded terrorist to save his life. The military truly values human lives and will always uphold human rights,” he said in a press statement.
