WWII grenade surrendered in Balbalan, Kalinga

Balbalan, Kalinga – A hand grenade used during the World War II was surrendered by a barangay official in Balbalan on November 25, 2022, the Kalinga Police Provincial Office reported.

The grenade was described to be MK-2 fragmentation, which was introduced in 1918 and was said to have been used until the 1960s. This type of hand grenade was utilized to supplement small arms in close combat, and it is said to produce casualties by high-velocity projections of fragments.

According to KPPO, the MK-2 hand grenade was turned over by a barangay official in Balbalan to the personnel of the 2nd Kalinga Provincial Mobile Force Company(KPMFC).

The surrender of the said explosive was made through the continuous and intensified campaign of the Philippine National Police against loose firearms. This program is done by visiting the communities and encouraging them to surrender unlicensed guns as well as explosives in order to prevent these items from causing harm to the people.

The grenade was brought to the custody of the 2nd KPMFC for documentation and proper disposition.

As recalled, two rifle grenades have been also turned over by barangay officials in Pasil to the police on November 15 this year. The grenades were surrendered by an individual in the area.
