yKalinga athlete won 2 gold medals in national kickboxing championship 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – An yKalinga athlete snatched two gold medals during the National Kickboxing Championship 2023 which was held from November 14 - 17 in Tagaytay City.

About 200 athletes from various martial arts clubs nationwide competed in said event in the hope of representing the country in the oncoming Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2024.

Jomar Esteban Balangui, a native of Balbalan, Kalinga, won the 57-kilogram Kicklight and 57 kgs. full contact categories.

Aside from the gold medals, he was also conferred the Best Male Kickboxer Senior Category Award during the three-day competition.

In his interview with GURU Press Cordillera, Balangui shared that his mother motivated him to practice eagerly and eventually succeed in his respective matches.

“During the competition laging nagmemessage yung mother ko para imotivate ako kaya mas lalo akong ginanahang sungkitin yung gold medal. . . .Gusto ko maging proud siya sa akin . . . Kahit na single parent siya ay napalaki niya kami ng maayos ng kapatid ko,” Balangui said.

He then expressed gratitude to his coaches for supporting him stating that despite being a “slow learner”, his trainers supported him well during his training.

“Slow learner kase ako kaya kailangan na sipagan ko magtraining para magimprove pa ako . . .Salamat sa coaches specially to Kru Noriel, coach Dare, coach Zeph at coach Guzman na nagbigay ng payo at nagtraining sa akin,” he said.

As for his fellow athletes, Balangui advised them to continue practicing as well as to keep on praying.

“Sa mga atleta na tulad ko na matagal matuto ay wag kayong susuko. . . .Mas igihan niyo pa ang pagtitraining at wag ding kalimutang magdasal sa Panginoon para gabayan tayo,” he conveyed.
