yKalinga gal to receive 2023 Outstanding Young Scientist award

Tabuk City, Kalinga – With her significant contributions to science and technology in the country, an yKalinga scientist is set to receive one of the most prestigious awards in her field.


Dr. Nonawin L. Agustin, a Balik Scientist Fellow at the Department of Agriculture's Crop Biotechnology Center will be collecting this year’s Outstanding Young Scientist award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines, the highest recognition body on science and technology.

Among her notable contributions, as cited by NAST, is discovering genetic variables and mechanisms that are beneficial to rice growth, adaptability, and productivity in 'abiotically challenged situations'.


"She is recognized for her substantial contributions to identifying genetic variables and mechanisms that regulate L-type lateral root development," the recognition body wrote, adding that these identified mutant genes which are weg1,plr1,Osmed25 can be used as parent materials for genetic improvement and breeding of rice.


Agustin will be getting the said accolade during the culminating activity of the 45th NAST Annual Scientific Meeting on July 13, 2023 in Manila.


NAST Outstanding Young Scientist awardees are entitled to a P1 million research grant from the Department of Science and Technology apart from the P150,000 cash prize and trophy they will be receiving on the awarding ceremony.


This outstanding scientist of the year is a daughter of late Alberto Saboy Lucob and Cristeta Borreta of Balbalan.


Agustin finished her degree in Agriculture at the University of the Philippine Los Baños and obtained her masters and doctorate in Agricultural Sciences Major in Bioengineering Sciences at Nagoya University, Japan.
