yKalinga student is Summa Cum Laude in California


Graduating with flying colors is always possible with perseverance, but it takes more effort and hard work to finish university with the title summa cum laude.


Every college or university awards three Latin honors to their top-performing students who are able to meet the school’s grading standards. These distinctions are cum laude which means ‘with honor’; magna cum laude, ‘with great honor’; and the highest of all the three, summa cum laude, or ‘with greatest honor’.


Proving her hard work and brilliance, Jacoby Virginia Bawer Young whose roots could be traced to Lubuagan, Kalinga graduated summa cum laude at the California State University East Bay in Hayward.

To attain this highest honor from said university, a graduate should have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.85-4.00.


Jacoby who was able to maintain her grades amidst pressure and challenges in the university finished her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and received her recognition in a convocation ceremony on April 23.


The brilliant lady is the granddaughter of Kalinga Culture Bearer, Cirilo Bawer, and the daughter of the cultural artist, Jenny Bawer Young.
