Tabuk City, Kalinga – She loves singing but never in her life did she expect she will step on an international stage and win medals for the Philippines.

“Pakanta-kanta lang sa duty dati. Ngayon nakakanta na sa Amerika,” this is how Sergeant Sesy Lou Bucalen-Salazar described her journey in winning 2 silver and bronze medals during the 26th Annual World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Anaheim, California on August 05.

Salazar is one of the Philippine delegates who contributed to the 362 total medal haul of the country in the competition described to be ‘Talent Olympics’ as it was participated by 70 countries in the world.

Childhood dream

Salazar recounted to GURU Press Cordillera it was a childhood dream to sing in front of people, adding that at 2, her family already observed her potential in singing.

“Siguro mga 2 nakikitaan na ako ng parents ko, and I've always loved performers, particularly local ones, and vowed [to] myself that one day I'd be like them,” she shared.

While she’s passionate about serenading people with her golden voice, she never imagined that one day she will be heard by the world.

“I still can't believe I got to compete in WCOPA, let alone with extra medals. As in sa panaginip ko lang eto nakikita at nararanasan,” she expressed.

To singers

“Aim high,” this is what Salazar’s advice to other singers who loves performing. While waiting for the opportunity to come, she encourages them to have the strength to keep going and also to constantly believe in themselves.

“Do not be afraid to showcase your abilities because there are no limitations to obtaining your goal,” she stressed.

Salazar, meantime, along with the other Team Philippines will be flying back to the country on August 14. She will return to duty at the 5th Infantry Division in Gamu, Isabela.
