yKalinga student excels in National Math Trivia

Tabuk City, Kalinga – A student of Tabuk City National High School brought honor and pride not only to her school and Kalinga province but to the region.


Nimfa Dumalleg was the only Grade 12 contestant from Cordillera to make it to the Top 10 in the National Math Trivia tilt of the Association of Science and Mathematics Educators of Philippine Private Schools (ASMEPPS) held virtually on Saturday, March 11, 2023.


Despite her conflict schedule, she was able to manage her time well and land on the 9th spot in national ASMEPPS contest, and even topped the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC).

“The two competitions weren't related to each other but I was able to gain knowledge, skills, and techniques to be able to equally prepare for both competitions. The presence of mind and composure gained from extensive preparations were my weapon to have achieved my goal,” she expressed.


Dumalleg added joining the regional ASMEPPS provided her enough clue on what to expect in the nationwide trivia contest so amidst having been involved in other extra-curricular activities, she made sure she have time to do her research to further increase her knowledge and master the topics relevant to her participation.

Although she struggled a bit due to the conflicting schedule, she remained focused. She first finished DSPC which was scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. before moving to the ASMEPPS (3:00 – 4:00 p.m.). She recalled being late for 42 minutes for the ASMEPPS. With only 18 min. left, she was only able to answer 30 out of the 60 items.


“Upon knowing the result of the two competitions, I was not only so thankful but greatly amazed… Indeed, I was feeling so proud and fulfilled of my potential and preparedness,” Dumalleg stated.

She is beyond grateful to all people behind her success, including her family and friends for their unending support and encouragement.


“With your encouragement and confidence in me, we were able to make it. To my fellow students, our success in any competition must be obtained from the high trust and confidence in our potential watered with obedience and respect to the inputs and suggestions provided by our coach. Foremost to our God, for all the strength, and to the Holy Spirit for the wisdom and knowledge,” she concluded.


Meanwhile, her coach Miguel Salvador commended her, saying her hard work, dedication and love for math have paid off.


Since grade school, Dumalleg has been an achiever, bringing home awards and recognitions in various subjects.
