Cook from Benguet awarded Medal of Excellence in 2023 WorldSkills ASEAN Competition

Benguet, Philippines – A young cook from Mankayan, Benguet, bagged a Medallion of Excellence for representing the country in the recently-concluded WorldSkills ASEAN Competition 2023 at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.


The Medal of Excellence is awarded to candidates whose performance meets international standards based on the criteria set by WorldSkills International.

Allen Gacweng, a graduate scholar of TESDA- Cordillera State Institute of Technical Education (CSITE), won gold after competing with 10 other representatives from other ASEAN countries during said event.


Gacweng, to recall was considered the ‘strongest contingent, eventually winning gold in cooking during the Philippine National Skills Competition conducted on March 27-31, this year.


Winning first place paved the way for his journey to the prestigious international competition.


Other PH representatives, Gwyneth Nicole Abarquez, who competed in the Restaurant Service contest, and Cristian Lasaruz Asanza for Electrical Installation, got the same prestigious award.

Twenty-two other graduates of technical vocational schools in the Philippines also represented the country in other trade areas.


Now in its 13th year, ASEAN WorldSkills Competition is a skills-based event that brings youth, among the ASEAN member countries, to showcase and promote their skills through various hands-on activities.
